Experts classify canine heart diseases in one of two categories:

	Acquired Heart Diseases Heart diseases that the dog acquires during the course of its lifetime, usually as a result of normal wear and tear, infection or injury.

	Congenital Heart Diseases Heart problems that the dog has had from birth. They may or may not have been genetically inherited from the dog's parents.
